An Australian has died of injuries sustained in the London terrorist bombings last week, Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today.

Sam Ly, formerly of the southern city of Melbourne, became the only fatality among 10 Australians wounded in the July 7 underground train and bus bombings, Downer said.

He did not regain consciousness before dying at the National Hospital for Neurology in London. His death raised the toll from the bombings to 54.

Ly, 28, was on the top deck of the No.30 bus that was wrecked by a bomb blast in Tavistock Square.

Ly’s father, Hi, and nephew, John Ly, flew to London this week to join his girlfriend, Mandy Ha, at the hospital where they kept a bedside vigil.

Ly had recently returned to London with Ha to work in the city’s information technology industry.

Downer told reporters in Adelaide he had only recently been informed of the death by Ly’s family.
