Suicide car bomber kills at least eight policemen

A suicide car bomber today slammed into a truck that was carrying policemen along the main road connecting central Baghdad with its airport, killing at least eight officers and injuring at least 25.

The attack occurred at 4pm local time (1pm Irish time) when the suicide bomber ploughed his black BMW car at high speed into a truck carrying police officers from checkpoint to checkpoint along the road.

The officers were part of an evening shift that was replacing other officers at the checkpoints, said police Major Moussa Abdul Karim, of the Yarmouk police station, and medic Najam Abid of the al-Yarmouk hospital.
