US extends Saudi travel warning
The US State Department has extended a warning to Americans against unnecessary travel to Saudi Arabia because of a continuing threat of terrorist action against US citizens and interests.
The warning pointed out that non-emergency employees and families of American employees at the US Embassy and consulates general at Jeddah and Dhahran were withdrawn 13 months ago for security, and when they might return is not known.
Attackers struck at the Consulate General in Jeddah in December, resulting in casualties and damage.
“Although counter-terrorism efforts have succeeded in diminishing terrorist capabilities in Saudi Arabia, terrorist groups continue to target housing compounds and other establishments where Westerners may be located,” the US State Department said.
“Saudi government facilities are also targets.”
