Afghan President Hamid Karzai told the European Union today that poppy production, which is at the base of the heroin trade, would decline by up to 30% this year.

After meeting with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, the Afghan leader said there had been progress this year in curbing the illegal trade, which is estimated to account for over half of the country’s gross domestic product.
