Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s government called a vote of confidence for today tied to a decree aimed at making Italy’s economy more competitive.

The government called the vote in the lower house of parliament as it tries to rush the measure through by a May 15 deadline. Italy’s government frequently uses confidence votes to close the government ranks and brush aside amendments.
