Two powerful land mines exploded in a crowded residential area in the Indian portion of Kashmir today, killing six people and wounding 40 others, a paramilitary officer said.

The land mines were planted by suspected Islamic militants in the Jawahar Nagar district of Srinagar, the summer capital of India’s Jammu-Kashmir state, Hari Lal, an officer of the Central Reserve Police Force, told The Associated Press.
