NYC bridge reopens after security scare
Officials closed a New York City bridge for about an hour today after police received a report of a suspicious package there.
The black and red bag was found on the Manhattan side, on the lower bridge of the two-tier Manhattan Bridge. The span links the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn,
Police Department spokeswoman Annette Markowski said the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic around 9am (2pm Irish time). Subway tracks on the bridge also were closed.
CNN showed footage of police officers on the bridge examining X-rays they took of the bag’s contents.
Markowski said the bridge was reopened after the bag was removed. Further details were not immediately available.
The bag was discovered one day after two makeshift grenades exploded outside the British Consulate in midtown Manhattan, slightly damaging the front of the building but causing no injuries.
Authorities have made no arrest in yesterday morning’s explosion, which remained under investigation.
