Pilgrims flock to see Pope's first window appearance
Pilgrims, tourists and Romans are flocking to St Peter’s Square to see Pope Benedict XVI make the traditional Sunday window appearance – his first since being elected pontiff.
The appearance at the studio window of the papal apartment overlooking the square was a cherished appointment for Benedict’s predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who insisted on keeping it even in his final weeks of life when he was unable to speak publicly and was clearly suffering.
