A former clerk at a credit co-operative shot five people dead and then killed himself after robbing the co-operative in northern China, the government said today.

The killings happened yesterday at the Xiangchenggu Credit Co-operative in Qiuxian County in Hebei province, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

It identified the killer as Wang Yanjun and said he shot five employees after he “snatched a sum of 100,000 yuan (€9,300”. It said he then shot himself.

The report didn’t explain why Wang shot himself or give other details. It said the incident was still under investigation.
