Berlusconi hands in resignation

Premier Silvio Berlusconi today handed in his resignation to Italy’s president, news reports said.

Berlusconi pledged to form a new government immediately in an attempt to strengthen a government coalition hobbled by electoral defeat and discontent with Italy’s sluggish economy.
