Rescue operation underway as three swept into sea

A major rescue operation was launched in England today after three people were swept into the sea, the coastguard said.

Two of the trio, believed to be a man and a woman, were recovered from Scarborough’s North Bay and taken to Scarborough hospital, the Humber coastguard said.

Rescuers were still searching for a missing woman.

A coastguard spokesman said: “We are carrying out a search of Scarborough’s North Bay for a missing person believed to have been swept into the water.

“Two other people have been recovered from the sea and taken to Scarborough’s hospital.

We do not know how the three people were swept into the sea, and the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The spokesman said an RAF helicopter was involved in the search along with the RNLI, Police, Fire Brigade, and Coastguard.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public.
