Blast outside Baghdad army base

An explosion boomed across Iraq’s capital early today after a blast outside an Iraqi army base in the centre of the city.

The blast occurred near the former Muthanna airport in central Baghdad, and a plume of black smoke could be seen rising into the air, witnesses said.

Ambulances raced to the scene.

Iraqi security forces opened fire after the incident.
