A bomb exploded at a resort hotel in south-eastern Spain today, reports said. The building had been evacuated and no one was injured.

The Basque separatist group ETA was suspected in the explosion, TVE1 television said.

The bomb went off at 3.15pm (2.15 Irish time) in the Mediterranean town of Villajoyosa, 20 miles northeast of Alicante, the EFE news agency said.

The hotel, used as a vacation retreat by employees of the bank BBVA, had been evacuated, EFE said.

TVE1 said a warning had been telephoned to an office of the Basque newspaper Gara, the usual method for ETA warnings.
