Earthquake death toll rises markedly

The death toll in the powerful earthquake which shook central Iran today has risen to 400, according to reports.

The earthquake destroyed several villages, state-run television reported.

The epicentre of the earthquake was reported 35 miles north west of the provincial capital of Kerman, the US Geological Survey said.
