Quake rocks North Wales

North Wales was rocked by an earthquake today, the British Geological Survey said.

The tremor, which reached 3.1 on the Richter Scale, occurred south east of Colwyn Bay, but was felt by people in Llandudno, Bangor and Betws-y-Coed.

It happened at 6.44pm, with no reports of damage or injury.

Davie Galloway, a spokesman for the British Geological Survey, said although the quake was small by international standards, it was “quite significant” for the UK.

“A lot of people have phoned to say that they felt it,” he said.

Mr Galloway added that around three earthquakes of such a magnitude affected the UK every year.
