Gunman kills supervisor in car plant shooting

An employee of a Jeep production plant in Ohio shot three supervisors early today, killing one, before turning the gun on himself.

Police said the gunman walked into the Toledo plant with a double-barrelled shotgun, yelling and demanding that some of the body shop’s supervisors come to the office area.

The shooting happened in the plant’s body shop office about 8.45pm yesterday (1.45am today Irish time), police Chief Mike Navarre said.

Navarre did not release the victims’ names. The gunman, identified as Myles Meyers, 54, of Toledo, shot himself in the head, police said.

Mary Beth Halprin, a spokeswoman for DaimlerChrysler, Jeep’s parent company, said the gunman was disciplined recently for a minor infraction, but did not have details.

Police said employees were running out of the plant when they arrived on the scene.

The plant, which opened in 1997, employs almost 4,500 people on two shifts.
