UN mobilises financial backing for tsunami warning system

Delivering on their promises, the world's richest nations today pledged millions of euro for a new network that would detect tsunami in the Indian Ocean and alert vulnerable coastal communities to approaching killer waves.

Critics, however, said the UN conference in Japan should also be setting global disaster reduction targets.
