Vietnam confirms fourth bird flu death

Vietnam today confirmed the country’s fourth death from bird flu in two weeks, as the World Health Organisation called the disease a “frightening virus” and urged stronger measures to combat its spread.

Dr Phan Van Tu, chief virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City, said tests showed an 18-year-old woman, who died on Monday, had the fatal H5N1 strain of the virus that ravaged poultry farms across 10 countries in Asia last year and jumped to humans in Thailand and Vietnam.
