US troops opened fire near a police checkpoint south of Baghdad after their convoy was hit by a roadside bomb. A hospital official said yesterday that at least eight people were killed in the second American attack in two days.

Such attacks are exactly what the US does not want prior to national elections scheduled for January 30.
