Asia: Hope fades for more survivors as death toll nears 70,000

Workers from Indonesia to India rushed to bury corpses to ward off disease today as cargo planes touched down with promised aid – from lentils to water purifiers – to help the region cope with its tsunami catastrophe.

The death toll headed toward 70,000 but the World Health Organisation warned that communicable diseases could double the number killed by the waves.
