Bus crash in Colombia kills at least 20

Two buses packed with holidaymakers crashed head-on in south-eastern Colombia, killing at least 20 people and injuring 30 others, police said.

The accident occurred late yesterday on a main road linking Santander de Quilichao and Villarica, about 135 miles south-east of the capital, Bogota, said a spokesman for Colombia’s highway police.

Authorities were investigating whether the crash was caused by a mechanical error such as brake failure or excess speed.

Police feared the death toll could rise as more bodies were pulled from the wreckage.

Road accidents are common in Colombia, and are often caused by poor roads and disregard for traffic rules.
