Country-by-country death toll
At least 23,000 people were reported dead today around southern Asia and as far away as Somalia on Africa’s eastern coast.
Most were killed by massive tidal waves that smashed coastlines after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake off Indonesia’s coast on Sunday, followed by aftershocks in the region.
Death tolls by country:
-Sri Lanka: 12,520.
-Indonesia: 4,991.
-India: 4,371.
-Thailand: 918.
-Malaysia: 60.
-Myanmar: 57.
-Maldives: 43.
-Somalia: Hundreds.
-Seychelles: 3.
-Bangladesh: 2.
The International Red Cross has reported 23,700 deaths.
