A gas explosion today in a coal mine in central China has left 187 miners trapped, the government said.

The accident occurred at 7:20am (11.20pm Irish time Saturday) in the state-owned Chenjiashan coal mine in Shaanxi province where more than 200 workers were working underground, the official Xinhua News Agency said. It did not provide an exact number of miners in the shaft.
