Aftershocks hamper rescue efforts in Indonesia
A series of aftershocks in Indonesia’s remote Papua province today hampered rescue efforts, the day after a major earthquake killed at least 13 people and injured 65.
“We fear more people may be dying trapped under debris,” said Deputy Police Chief Maj. Wempi Batlairi. “But we can’t go look for them yet. The ground keeps shaking.”
Seismologists recorded 87 aftershocks with the most powerful measuring magnitude-4, said George Muabuay from the meteorological agency in provincial capital Jayapura, 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) north-east of Jakarta.
