The daughter of a politician held hostage held for the past 1,000 days by rebels in Colombia today accused the country’s president of not doing enough to win her release.

Melanie Betancourt said President Alvaro Uribe has “no political will. He only pretends to negotiate for his political image”.

Her mother, politician Ingrid Betancourt, has been held hostage by the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia since 2002 when she was campaigning as a candidate in presidential elections.

Melanie appealed to the French government to pressure Uribe’s administration. Betancourt holds dual Colombia-French citizenship.

France has “a big role to play”, said Melanie, who was speaking on RTL radio.
