Five injured in Lisbon emergency landing

Four passengers and a crew member suffered minor injuries today when a jetliner, en route from Madrid to Mexico, made an emergency landing at Lisbon’s international airport.

The Iberia flight was diverted to Lisbon after smoke was detected in a storage area.

The 288 passengers and 14 crew members on the Airbus A-340-600 evacuated the plane safely, though one woman suffered a broken ankle, Iberia said.

A preliminary investigation did not turn up evidence of fire, but further checks to find the source of the smoke were to continue.

The emergency landing forced the closure of Lisbon’s only airport for more than three hours, delaying Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose flight had stopped over in Lisbon
