Toddler survives nine-storey rubbish chute plunge

A two-year-old survived a nine-story fall down a rubbish chute in an apartment building in western Romania, a doctor said.

Gabriel Narcis Ruja climbed to the top floor of the high-rise building in the town of Petrila, 300 kilometres (187 miles) north-west of Bucharest after he was left unsupervised, hospital doctor Nicolae Moica said.

The boy was playing around the communal rubbish chute and fell into it, tumbling nine floors. His fall was broken by rubbish that had not been cleared for several days.

He was admitted to hospital in Petrosani suffering from a broken leg and a broken arm, said Moica.

He is said to be in a stable condition.
