Interior Ministry spokesman Colonel Adnan Abdul-Rahman of the said the blast occurred at 8.45am local time (5.54am Irish time) in the northern Azamiyah district.

Al-Nu’man Hospital officials said there were six people killed, including one woman. Ten others were wounded, including a two-year old girl.

The blast detonated near the Ministry of Education offices, according to a ministry employee.

Most of the employees managed to escape unscathed but the building’s guards, who were in the rear of the building, were among the casualties, he said.

The blast in Antar Square destroyed five cars, Abdul-Rahman said.
