Italy's controversial nominee to the European Commission Rocco Buttiglione has said he is stepping down after his candidacy caused outrage among European leaders.

Buttiglione, whose comments on homosexuality and women in the home caused uproar, told a news conference in Rome he was offering his resignation to smooth the way for the commission.
