Haggard Arafat leaves West Bank for Paris

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat left the West Bank early today in a Jordanian military helicopter on his way to receive treatment in Paris for an ailment that has left him haggard and weak.

It is his first trip outside the West Bank for nearly three years. Israel lifted a travel ban to allow him to seek treatment abroad, pledging that he would be allowed to return afterward.
