Eight years in prison for Iraq abuse sergeant
US army Sergeant Ivan Frederick was jailed for eight years today for abusing inmates in Iraq’s notorious Abu Ghraib prison.
The 38-year-old part time soldier had admitted abusing and humiliating Iraqi detainees in a plea deal at a Baghdad court martial.
He was also given a reduction in rank, forfeiture of pay, and a dishonourable discharge.
Frederick is the highest ranking soldier implicated in the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, which broke in April with the publication of photos and video that showed American soldiers abusing Iraqi detainees.
