EU deadlocked over lifting Chinese arms embargo

EU foreign ministers were deadlocked today on lifting a 15-year-old arms embargo on China despite strong French pressure, officials said.

A majority of EU nations remain against lifting the ban, arguing Beijing has not done enough to improve the human rights situation since it was imposed in 1989 after the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square.
