Five suspected ETA members arrested

Police today arrested five suspected members of the armed Basque separatist group ETA in northern Spain, acting on information obtained in weekend raids that netted the group’s alleged leader.

The suspects were arrested in San Sebastian and Irun, both in Basque country, and in Pamplona in neighbouring Navarra, the reports said.

Interior Ministry officials were not immediately available to confirm the reports.

Spanish news agencies said the arrests stemmed from statements by a Spanish truck driver arrested on Sunday in northern Spain, part of a broader raid in south-west France that netted 20 other suspects including ETA’s alleged leader, known by his alias Mikel Antza.
