Two children who thought a hand grenade was a toy were killed along with their older sister when the device exploded as they played with it, police in Honduras said today.

Police said that 14-year-old Maria Lizeth Hernandez and her four-year-old sister Tania found the old grenade yesterday along a path near their house in Arenales, around 120 miles west of Tegucigalpa.

The grenade exploded after they brought it home thinking it was a plaything, police said.

Both of the children were killed, along with their 22-year-old sister Anabel.

Their mother Consuelo Aguirre, 44, and her grandson Cristian, two, were seriously injured.
