A swollen creek swept a villager away as Typhoon Aere crashed into mainland China, unleashing torrential rains and prompting the evacuation of a half-million people.

Heavy rains were forecast today as Aere moved inland, leaving flooding and mudslides in its wake. Apart from the one man reported missing in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, no other casualties were reported in China. Elsewhere in the region, Aere killed 16.
