The armed Basque separatist group ETA has claimed responsibility for a car bomb that exploded in the northern Spanish town of San Vicente de la Barquera.

No one was injured in the explosion, which happened minutes after a warning phone call was made to the police and a local newspaper, the state news agency Efe reported.

ETA, which has been labelled a terrorist organisation by the United States and European Union, has been blamed for more than 800 killings in its 37-year-old battle for an independent Basque homeland straddling northern Spain and south-west France.
