The Mercury Messenger probe, which will conduct a detailed investigation of the first planet from the Sun, was launched successfully today after a 24-hour delay.

The spacecraft blasted off just before 7.17am from Cape Canaveral in Florida, aboard a Boeing Delta 2 rocket for a seven-year journey.
