The UN Security Council adopted a US backed resolution that implicitly threatens sanctions against the Sudanese government if it does not rein in Arab militias blamed for atrocities in the western Darfur region.

The resolution was adopted with 13 yes votes. There were two abstentions by China and Pakistan, which opposed the threat of sanctions, saying the Khartoum government needs more time to stop the violence.
