Two explosions went off outside an Interior Ministry troops’ base in a Russian republic bordering warring Chechnya today, wounding eight people, the Interior Ministry reported.

Russian news reports said the first explosion was a bomb, but the cause of the second one was not immediately stated.

The first blast occurred at the gates of the base just south of Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, the regional Interior Ministry said.

There were conflicting reports on when the second blast occurred – between 10 minutes and an hour after the first.

A bus with base personnel had just arrived when the first explosion went off.
