Iraq bomb kills one, wounds six

A roadside bomb exploded early today, killing one US 1st Infantry Division soldier and injuring six others north of the Iraqi capital, a US military spokesman said.

Maj Neal O’Brien, of the 1st Infantry Division, said the soldiers were on patrol in a Bradley fighting vehicle in Duluiyah, 45 miles north of Baghdad, when the bomb detonated shortly after midnight.

The six wounded soldiers were taken to a military medical facility. The identity of the dead soldier was not revealed pending notification of next of kin.

Until this attack, 893 US service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the US Defence Department.

Of those, 659 died as a result of hostile action and 234 died of non-hostile causes.
