A roadside bomb near the Iraqi city of Samarra killed two US soldiers and wounded three others today, the military said in a statement.

The soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division were wounded when an improvised explosive device blew up near their convoy at about 4.30pm, the statement said.

The injured soldiers were taken to a military medical facility. Two will be returned to duty, while the condition of the third is being evaluated, the military said.

The names of the soldiers killed were being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.

More than 875 US service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq.
