London is EU's biggest city

London is the European Union’s biggest city and Palma in Majorca its fastest growing.

Per capita, Luxembourg has the most cinemas and Poland the worst unemployment.

In its latest urban statistics report, released in Brussels today, the EU head office says the 25-nation union has 18 cities with populations exceeding one million.

London tops the list with 7.2 million, followed by Paris (6.2 million), Berlin (3.4 million), Madrid (3 million), Rome (2.7 million) and Budapest (1.8 million).

The Urban Audit report found that of the 16 EU cities with a jobless rate exceeding 20%, 12 are in Poland: Suwalki (25.6%), Nowy Sacz (25.2%) and Gorzow Wielkopolski (24.3%).

Five Spanish cities made it to the list of the EU’s fastest growing cities: Palma de Mallorca, Pamplona, Badajoz, Logrono and Murcia.

The study examined 258 cities in the EU, Bulgaria and Romania and used data from 1999-2001.
