Powell condemns 'barbarous' beheading

US Secretary of State Colin Powell tonight condemned as "barbarous" the beheading of US hostage Paul Johnson by Islamic militants in Saudi Arabia and vowed to redouble efforts to combat terrorism.

Powell, meeting briefly with reporters, said he could not officially confirm reports of Johnson’s death but his words suggested he had no quarrel with the reports.
