Karachi death toll rises to nine

The senior general in Pakistan’s volatile city of Karachi narrowly escaped an assassination today as his motorcade came under a gun and bomb ambush that left at least nine people dead.

Gunmen in buildings on opposite sides of a main road in the city centre opened fire on a convoy escorting Lieutenant General Ahsan Saleem Hayat, the Karachi corps commander.
