Sam Dash, the former chief Watergate counsel who became a household name in the 1970s died today after a lengthy illness, his family said. He was 79.

Dash, who cultivated a reputation for independence and as an ardent advocate for legal ethics, died at the Washington Hospital Center, according to family members.
