A bus carrying Tunisians on an excursion went off the road as it went down a hill, killing 19 people and injuring 31 others.

The official TAP news agency said a technical problem may have been behind yesterday’s accident in a mountainous area 40 miles north of Tunis, the capital.

President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali sent a delegation of ministers to the site in the Korbous region to oversee rescue operations. The injured were transferred to hospitals in three cities.

The bus carrying 54 people from the town of Monastir, 100 miles from the capital, went off the road as the driver manoeuvred to keep the vehicle from going over a hill, according to TAP.
