Abramovich 'should quit as regional governor'
The head of Russia’s highest audit body cranked up the pressure against oil magnate Roman Abramovich today, saying the billionaire should step down as governor of a remote Arctic region, the Interfax news agency reported.
The sharp comment from Russian Audit Chamber chairman Sergei Stepashin came days after the financial control body said the Chukotka region is practically bankrupt and has doled out questionable tax breaks to Abramovich’s oil company, sparking speculation he could be the next target for state prosecutors after jailed former Yukos chief Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
