Car thief's shock at baby on board

A car thief called police in a panic today when he discovered a baby in the back of a car he had taken.

He said he did not realise he had accidentally abducted the 18-month old girl and he didn’t know what to do, police said.

“He wanted to leave the child somewhere where the police would find her quickly,” said a police spokesman.

The distraught parents of Chelsea Andress had already called police to report that their daughter had been abducted when their car was taken from outside their home in Brisbane, Australia.

Police told the thief to dump the car and baby and let them know where it was. To the relief of parents Tracey and David Andress, he did, before fleeing.

Tracey and David were reunited with their child at a service station a short time later and said she was largely unfazed by her ordeal.

“She was just a bit cranky about being left in the seat so long,” David Andress said.
