Singh named Indian prime minister

Manmohan Singh has been named Indian prime minister.

India’s victorious Congress party named the 71-year-old economic reformer and political veteran today after Sonia Gandhi shocked the nation by abandoning her claim to the top job.

Italian-born Gandhi bowed out yesterday to allay fears of Hindu nationalists who were outraged over the prospects of a foreign-born leader.
