Sonia Gandhi is reconsidering whether to become India’s prime minister, an ally said today.
Somnath Chatterjee, an MP from the Congress Party of India-Marxist, said, “I’ve been informed that Sonia Gandhi is considering the position again.”
He spoke after Indian television stations reported that the Italian-born Gandhi did not want to become prime minister of the world’s largest democracy.
Chatterjee and the news media said Gandhi would make an announcement later today.
He said, “There are rumours that her children are against her becoming prime minister, maybe because of security reasons. It’s there family matter.”
